In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 261 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people usually resident in Cootamundra (A), 51.3% were male and 48.7% were female.

In the 2006 Census, 40.6% of the population usually resident in Cootamundra (A) were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 13.4% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 19 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, the most common response for Indigenous language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in Cootamundra (A) was Arrernte 1.5%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 99.2% resident in Cootamundra (A)

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 71 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Cootamundra (A) were in the labour force. Of these 70.4% were employed and 29.6% were unemployed. 83 were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, 33.8% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over who were usually resident in Cootamundra (A) had completed Year 10 or equivalent, and 14.3% had completed Year 12 or equivalent. 9.1% aged 15-19 years were in full-time education and 26.6% aged 15 years and over had a qualification.

The median weekly rent was $130 and the median monthly mortgage repayment was $823. The average household size was 3.0 and the average number of people per bedroom was 1.1.
