In the 2006 Census, 38.4% of the population usually resident in Cardwell (S) were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 8.4% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 21 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for Indigenous language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in Cardwell (S) were Girramay 2.1%, Dyirbal 0.5%, Torres Strait Creole 0.4%, Kanai 0.4% and Kalaw Kawaw Ya/Kalaw Lagaw Ya 0.4%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 88.2% resident in Cardwell (S)

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 274 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Cardwell (S) were in the labour force. Of these 89.1% were employed and 10.9% were unemployed. 193 were not in the labour force.
