In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 1,171 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people usually resident in Gunnedah (A), 51.2% were male and 48.8% were female.

In the 2006 Census, 43.7% of the population usually resident in Gunnedah (A) were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 10.7% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 17 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, there were no responses for Indigenous language spoken at home. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 96.9% resident in Gunnedah (A)

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 326 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Gunnedah (A) were in the labour force. Of these 78.5% were employed and 21.5% were unemployed. 285 were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, 29.2% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over who were usually resident in Gunnedah (A) had completed Year 10 or equivalent, and 10.5% had completed Year 12 or equivalent. 8.7% aged 15-19 years were in full-time education and 33.0% aged 15 years and over had a qualification.

The median weekly rent was $120 and the median monthly mortgage repayment was $775. The average household size was 3.3 and the average number of people per bedroom was 1.2.
