The revised estimates contained in this bulletin replace the series published in Employment and Unemployment (cat. no. 6213.0).
Between population census benchmarks the employment data are obtained from three main sources, namely (a) payroll tax returns, (b) returns from government bodies, and (c) some other returns (e.g., for hospitals); the balance, i.e. unrecorded private employment, is estimated. At June 1971 recorded employment obtained from the foregoing sources represented about 90 per cent of the employees in the industries covered, as determined by the benchmarks.
The figures in this bulletin generally relate only to civilian wage and salary earners, not the total labour force. They therefore exclude employers, self-employed persons, unpaid helpers and the unemployed. Also excluded, because of the inadequacy of data, are employees in agriculture and private households employing staff. For the sake of brevity, wage and salary earners are referred to in the tables as "employees".
