Sales of new motor vehicles on the increase The trend estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles rose for the tenth consecutive month in August 2003 to reach a new record high of 79,278. This is 13.7% higher than the August 2002 estimate. The trend increase in total new motor vehicle sales was 1,117 or 1.4% in August 2003 compared with July 2003. New passenger vehicle sales and new other vehicle sales accounted for 0.8% and 0.6% respectively of this increase. Only the Northern Territory recorded a fall from July 2003 to August 2003 (3.1%) while all of the other states and the Australian Capital Territory recorded increases in total new motor vehicle sales. Tasmania (2.5%), Queensland (2.2%), Western Australia (2.0%) and New South Wales (1.5%) recorded trend growth above the national average. Seasonally adjusted estimates rose slightly with 79,316 total new motor vehicle sales in August 2003 compared with 78,316 in July 2003.
