There are more cars on Canberra's roads than ever before, according to an analysis of 2006 Census figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The average number of cars per household in Canberra has increased from 1.6 to 1.7 since 2001; this is an additional 18,850 cars (to 194,400 in total). Queanbeyan has seen the same increase per household, with an additional 3,560 cars (to 22,305 in total).

Areas with the largest increases in cars were Gungahlin-Hall, Belconnen and Tuggeranong.

Other key findings from the report are:

For the ACT, over the ten years to 2006,

• the proportion of households with three or more vehicles grew from 11% to 15%.
• the proportion of households with two vehicles grew from 36% to 39%.
• the proportion of households with no motor vehicles dropped from 9% to 7%.

For Queanbeyan, over the ten years to 2006,

• the proportion of households with three or more vehicles grew from 11% to 17%.
• the proportion of households with two vehicles grew from 34% to 37%
• the proportion of households with no motor vehicles dropped from 12% to 8%.
