Community Profiles


What are they?

A Community Profile provides a comprehensive statistical picture of an area in Excel spreadsheet format.

Tables of Census data will be presented in a series of spreadsheets and provide characteristics relating to people, families and dwellings. They will cover most topics on the Census form.

The profiles for the 2011 Census are:

Who are they for?

If you're interested in researching, planning or analysing small and large geographic areas, profiles are for you. You can compare different geographic areas on a number of social, economic and demographic variables.


What's new?

Profiles will be largely the same as they were for the 2006 Census. We are reviewing the content of the profiles and there may be some minor changes to the final tables. You can explore templates for each of the profiles types in Betaworks.

What do they do?

Community Profiles contain the following six profiles:

Basic Community Profile

This profile has a series of tables showing basic Census characteristics on persons, families and dwellings in the selected area.

The data will be based on place of usual residence, i.e. where people usually live.

Basic Community Profiles - List of Tables

Place of Enumeration Profile

This profile has a series of tables showing basic Census characteristics on persons, families and dwellings in the selected area.

The data will be based on place of enumeration, i.e. where people were counted on Census night, rather than where they 'usually' live or their 'usual address'.

Indigenous Profile

This profile has a series of tables showing Census characteristics of Indigenous persons, families and dwellings in the selected area.

Some tables include comparisons with the non-Indigenous population. The data will be based on place of usual residence.

Indigenous Profile - List of TablesTime Series Profile

This profile compares data from the 2001, 2006 and 2011 Censuses where the classifications are comparable. Where classifications have been revised between Censuses, data will be output on the classification used for the 2011 Census. To provide comparability between Censuses, the revised classifications will be concorded, and footnotes added to the tables to indicate this. Relevant concordance files will be available though our website.

The data will be based on place of enumeration.

An important change for the 2011 Census is the introduction of a new geographical standard. This will have an effect on the Time Series Profile as the Statistical Local Area (SLA) geography is no longer a defined region in the new standard. As a transitional arrangement, and for the 2011 Census only, we will release the Time Series Profile at the SLA level.

Time series data from the 2011 Census will be available for Australia, States and Territories, 2011 Statistical Local Areas and 2011 Local Government Areas.

Expanded Community Profile

This profile is the most comprehensive Community Profile in the series providing extended data on Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings. Tables within this profile contain more detailed versions of the standard Basic Community Profile tables, plus additional tables relating to relationships within a family, living costs and dwelling structures.

The data will be based on place of usual residence.

Expanded Community Profile - List of Tables

Working Population Profile

This Profile has a series of tables on Census characteristics of employed persons in the selected area.

This data will be based on Journey to Work (or 'a persons Place of Work') areas, i.e. where people work.
