    OVERVIEW

The Survey of Work in Selected Culture and Leisure Activities is a supplementary to the Monthly Population Survey and is expected to be conducted every three to four years. It collects data on involvement in cultural activities and sports participation which are cross-classified by demographic characteristics collected from the Labour Force Survey.

    PURPOSE

The object of the survey is to obtain data about the population's paid and unpaid involvement in a range of culture, sport and leisure activities; the classification used to develop the most recent list of activities is based on the Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications. While details of participation in sports (in both a playing and non-playing capacity) is collected, details of which sports participation occurred are not collected. Principal users are the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) of the ABS, the Statistical Working Group to the Cultural Ministers Council, the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, and the Recreation and Sports Industry Statistics Group (RSISG) to the Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport (SCORS).

    SCOPE

The scope of the collection includes all persons resident in Australia and aged 15 and over except:

    • those residing in non-private dwellings (hotels, motels, hostels etc.),
    • members of the permanent defence forces,
    • certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments customarily excluded from census and estimated populations, and
    • overseas residents in Australian and members of non Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia.

In the Monthly Population Survey, coverage rules are applied which aim to ensure that each person is associated with only one dwelling, and hence has only one chance of selection. The chance of a person being enumerated at two separate dwellings in the one survey is considered to be negligible.
