Purpose
To provide comprehensive data on Australia's research and development (R&D) effort for businesses. Includes industries by ANZSIC class relating to Mining (including services to mining), and Petroleum, coal, chemical and associated product, and by the socioeconomic objective of economic development (energy resources and energy supply categories).
Description
The scope of the survey is all businesses within the Business sector of Australia which have undertaken R&D. The vast majority of businesses in this sector are private businesses. The remainder are public businesses mainly engaged in trading or financial activities. The 1998-99 R&D survey comprised a complete enumeration of businesses identified by the ABS as likely R&D performers.
Method of collection
Mail questionnaire.
Data detail
Expenditure on R&D by industry, type of expenditure, activity, source of funds, location of expenditure, and size of business
Resources devoted to R&D by socioeconomic objective, and field of research
Expected and actual R&D expenditure
Human resources devoted to R&D by industry, size of business, and type of employee
Payments and receipts for technical know-how by industry
Geographic coverage
Australia and by State and Territory.
Frequency of data availability
Annual and year ended 30 June.
Historical data
Data are available for 1976-77, 1981-82 and from 1983-84.
