Grape production has increased significantly in Victoria in recent years.

Data for 2006-07 indicated there were 37,000 hectares of bearing vines in Victoria and a further 1,900 hectares not yet bearing fruit. A total of 420,000 tonnes of grapes were produced, with most (74.0%) grown for winemaking. White grape production (263,000 tonnes) exceeded red grape production (156,000 tonnes).

Four varieties of grapes accounted for 61.0% of all production: sultana (77,000 tonnes), chardonnay (97,000 tonnes), shiraz (48,000) and cabernet sauvignon (34,000 tonnes).

Data for 2006-07 indicated 88.0% of all grape production in Victoria came from the Mallee Statistical Division (368,000 tonnes). This was followed by the Goulburn Statistical Division with 17,600 tonnes.
