Chapter 6: Work
The 'Work' chapter examines key concepts and definitions relating to both economic and non-economic work. It discusses how work relates to the economy and the connection between work and wellbeing. Some of the important social issues relating to work are summarised, covering issues relating to working conditions, unemployment and unpaid work. Some population groups of interest are discussed. The chapter presents an overall framework for economic work, encompassing supply, price, demand and arbitration dimensions. The ABS Labour Force Framework is delineated, with discussion of measures of employment and unemployment (including discussion of the concepts of marginal attachment to the labour force, underemployment and current economic activity). Some measurement issues are discussed in relation to economic work, and the Time Use Framework, which is used in measuring non-economic work is outlined. Key data sources are listed and summarised.
