Barley is grown in all states of Australia, with the major producing area being South Australia. It is grown principally as a grain crop although in some areas it is used as a fodder crop for grazing, with grain subsequently harvested if conditions are suitable. Barley is used primarily for stockfeed and malting purposes and on a small scale for human consumption. In 2003-04, production was 2.7 million tonnes.
