Chapter 2: Population
The 'Population' chapter discusses key concepts in the population area of concern, including how the total population is defined, population structure and geographic distribution. The effect of population size, growth, structure and distribution on wellbeing is discussed as are some key social issues centering on population, such as migration, sustainability and population ageing. The key concepts and methods involved in counting populations and making population estimates, projections and forecasts are described, and the issues involved in defining geographical areas, in describing multicultural Australia and in identifying the Australia's Indigenous population are discussed. A variety of measurement issues are covered, including those relating to completeness of census counts, net overseas migration, internal migration and to reconciling intercensal estimates.
