Purpose
To produce index numbers which measure changes in the prices of imports of merchandise landed in Australia.
Description
The Import Price Index numbers for each quarter relate to prices of those imports of merchandise that are physically landed in Australia during that quarter. Imports are priced on a 'free on board' country of origin basis. Freight and insurance charges involved in shipping the goods from foreign to Australian ports are therefore excluded from the prices used in the index, as are Australian import duties.
Method of collection
Mail questionnaire. Prices of individual shipments are obtained from importers of the selected items, and relate to the quarter in which the goods arrive in Australia.
