NUMBER OF INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS (ISPs)
The December 2011 Internet Activity Survey (IAS) is a reduced-scope collection, covering ISPs with more than 1,000 subscribers. For further detail about the scope refer to Explanatory Note 4.
ISPs in the IAS have been classified by size according to the number of subscribers that ISPs reported at the end of the reference period. For data reported in this release the size categories are:
Size of ISP | Definition of Size
(no. of subscribers) |
Medium ISP | 1,001–10,000 |
Large ISP | 10,001–100,000 |
Very large ISP | 100,001 or more |
As at 31 December 2011, there were 91 ISPs with over 1,000 subscribers operating in Australia, compared with 97 ISPs in June 2011 and 104 ISPs in December 2010.
There has been no change to the number of Large and Very Large ISPs since June 2011. The decrease in the number of Medium-sized ISPs over this time can be attributed to takeovers, ceasing ISP activity and units falling out of scope.
