HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
FAMILY COMPOSITION This data item describes the composition of families. These include couple families and one parent families. The family is described as a single unit, so all members in the family will have the same family characteristics for a given month. Families within multiple-family households are separately identified by the identifier Family ID [ABSFID] 'Other family' includes families where no couple relationship or parent-child relationships exist, such as siblings living together. Non-family members have a series of supplementary codes to define their relationship to the family, families or other members in the household. Family characteristics are not collected in special dwellings (see Residence Status [URSTATC]). For more information on families and how ABS defines family characteristics, refer to the publication Family, Household and Income Unit Variables, 2005 (cat. no. 1286.0).
