MAY KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during May 2009 (474,900 movements), rose 0.3% compared with April 2009 (473,500 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.7% for March 2009 and 0.4% for April 2009.
  • Currently, trend estimates for arrivals are 1.3% higher than in May 2008.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During May 2009, arrivals (468,400 movements) decreased by 1.8% compared with April 2009 (476,900 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 0.5% for March 2009 and a monthly increase of 0.3% for April 2009.
  • Original estimates: There were 374,900 arrivals to Australia in May 2009.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures from Australia during May 2009 (490,700 movements), recorded an increase of 0.9% compared with April 2009 (486,600 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.6% for March 2009 and 0.8% for April 2009.
  • Currently, trend estimates for departures are 1.5% higher than in May 2008.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During May 2009, departures (507,100 movements) decreased by 0.4% compared with April 2009 (509,300 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 2.4% for March 2009 and a monthly increase of 9.3% for April 2009.
  • Original estimates: There were 500,400 departures from Australia during May 2009.
