Preliminary estimates show the total production of grapes decreased by 16% for the 2003 harvest to 1.5 million tonnes, compared with the 2002 harvest. The largest producing state, South Australia, recorded a decrease in production, down by 10% to 626,500 tonnes. The next largest producing states recorded large decreases: Victorian production decreased by 24% to 391,600 tonnes; and New South Wales production decreased by 17% to 374,000 tonnes.
The total area of vines reported increased marginally from the 2002 season, to a record 159,400 hectares in the 2003 season. Increases were reported in South Australia (up 3% to 68,800 hectares) and Western Australia (up marginally to 11,500 hectares) with falls reported in every other state and territory.
