INTRODUCTION
Perinatal deaths comprise stillbirths (fetal deaths) and deaths of infants within the first 28 days of life (neonatal deaths). New scope definitions were applied to the perinatals collection in November 2009 to achieve consistency between ABS collections and other external collections. See Perinatal Deaths, Australia, 2007 (cat. no. 3304.0) for the new scope definitions and historical data for the years 1999-2006 republished based on the new scope.
2008 Process Improvement
2008 (preliminary) data have been subject to a process improvement which has improved the quality of these data. See Technical Note 1: Perinatal Deaths Process Improvement for further information.
2007 Causes of Death Revisions Process
All coroner certified deaths registered after 1 January 2007 are now subject to a revisions process.
2007 (revised) data which have been subjected to the revisions process are published in this release. 2008 (preliminary) data which have not yet been subjected to the revisions process are also published in this release. Data cubes in this publication present both 2007 revised data and 2008 preliminary data by Main condition in fetus and Main condition in mother.
Please note, the revisions process impacts only on the causes of death assigned to a record. The revisions process does not impact on the identification of a record as perinatal, fetal or neonatal and therefore total counts will not change due to the application of the revisions process.
For more information see Technical Note 2: Revisions Process. Where 2007 data is presented in this release, they are 2007 revised data.
