Capital expenditure
In 2011-12, the estimate of capital expenditure accounted for 21% of all state and territory funded cultural expenditure and is higher than the proportions in previous years (18% in both 2010-11 and 2009-10). The governments of the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria allocated the highest proportions of total cultural expenditure to capital projects in 2011-12 with 32% and 26% respectively.
In 2011-12 Environmental heritage ($258.0m) and Other museums and cultural heritage ($162.8m) accounted for 60% of total capital expenditure while Performing arts venues ($145.7m) accounted for 21%. Since 2010-11, fluctuations in capital expenditure were experienced in specific categories. In particular, the estimate of capital expenditure on Music composition and publishing fell $3.7m (94%). This was offset by expenditure increases on Other performing arts $6.5m (102%) and Other arts up from $15.8m to $20.7m (31% ). Other museums and cultural heritage rose 73% ($68.9m).
In dollar terms, of all the state and territory governments, the New South Wales Government had the highest estimate for capital expenditure on Heritage activities ($140.0m) and the Victorian Government had the highest estimate for capital expenditure on Arts activities ($80.9m).
