INNOVATION STILL IN DEVELOPMENT
Overall, the proportion of businesses which had innovation still in development as at 30 June 2008 was greater for each successive employment size range. Businesses employing more than 200 persons reported the highest proportion for innovation still in development (46%), compared to 18% for businesses with 0-4 persons employed. However, it should be noted 46% of larger businesses represents approximately 1,400 businesses, whereas 18% of businesses with 0-4 persons employed is an estimated 80,000 businesses. New goods or services and new marketing methods were the most commonly reported type of innovation that was still in development as at 30 June 2008 (both 11%). This was followed by new operational processes (9%) and new organisational/managerial processes (8%). The industry with the highest proportion of innovative activity still in development was Wholesale trade at 34%. Businesses within the Construction industry reported the lowest proportion of innovation still in development at 14%, slightly below those in the Transport, postal and warehousing industry (15%). The highest proportions of businesses with goods or services and marketing methods still in development were in Information media and telecommunications (21% and 17% respectively). The Mining industry recorded the highest proportion of businesses with operational processes still in development (17%) while both the Professional, scientific and technical services and Health care and social assistance industries reported the highest proportion for organisational/managerial processes still in development (12%). The Construction and Transport, postal and warehousing industries reported the lowest proportions of businesses with new goods and services (both at 5%). Transport, postal and warehousing also reported the lowest proportions for businesses with new marketing methods still in development (5%). The Rental, hiring and real estate services industry reported the lowest proportion of businesses with operational processes still in development (4%).
