The estimate of expenditure on the Arts, funded by the state and territory governments, rose 13% in 2011-12 and was 26% of the total state and territory government expenditure on cultural activities. This rise was the result of large increases in expenditure for Performing arts venues (up $78.2m), Other arts (up $30.8m) and Other performing arts (up $11.5m),

The governments of Victoria (27%), New South Wales (24%) and Queensland (17%) accounted for over two thirds (67%) of all Arts expenditure in 2011-12. Performing arts venues accounted for the highest amount of state and territory Arts expenditure ($294.4m) in 2011-12. The New South Wales Government provided 35% and the Victorian Government contributed 34% of the estimate of expenditure in this category.

Other arts and Film and video production and distribution were also major components of Arts expenditure, accounting for $215.4m and $103.2m respectively. The Victorian Government accounted for 40% of the estimate of expenditure on Film and video production and distribution.
