Aggregate sentence length (federal prisoners)

A majority of federal prisoners (41%) had an aggregate sentence length of 5 to under 10 years, with 71% having an aggregate sentence length of 2 to under 15 years. In the total prisoner population (sentenced prisoners only), the aggregate sentence length was generally lower than the federal population, with the most common aggregate sentence length being 2 to under 5 years (26%) and a majority of prisoners (68%) with an aggregate sentence length between 1 to under 10 years. For the federal prisoner population, 6% of prisoners had an aggregate sentence length of 20 years and over compared to 3% for the total prisoner population.

Federal prisoners in New South Wales had the highest median aggregate sentence length (84.1 months), followed by federal prisoners in Queensland and the Northern Territory (both 60.0 months). For these three states/territories, the total prisoner population had lower median aggregate sentence lengths (45.0 months, 36.0 months and 20.0 months respectively).
