- Over 235,000 overseas visitors arrived for a holiday in Western Australia during the year ending June 2009. The top five countries of origin were the United Kingdom (24%); Singapore (18%); Malaysia (12%); Japan (6%) and New Zealand (just under 5%).
- Almost 78,000 tourists arrived in the December quarter 2009, reflecting the state's popularity among visitors from the northern hemisphere as a summer or Christmas holiday destination. Of these 78,000 short-term visitors, 42% were from the United Kingdom or other European countries.
- In the December quarter 2009, 1.9% more overseas visitors arrived on holiday compared with the same quarter of 2008. The most common country of origin was the United Kingdom, followed by Singapore and Malaysia.
- The number of Malaysian tourists was 12% higher in the December quarter 2009 (8700) than in the same quarter of the previous year.. However, an increase in Malaysian visitors for the latest quarter followed a 31% drop in the September quarter.
- Holidaymakers from Thailand showed the largest proportional annual increase (82%) while those from the USA increased by 36%, albeit from a relatively small base.
- The largest decreases in the year to September 2009 were in holidaymakers from South Africa (down 22%) and Japan (down 6%). Apart from slight decreases for the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Indonesia (down between 0.1% and 2.5%), the number of visitors on holiday increased for all other countries in the 'top ten' list.
