The value of operating profit before tax for book publishers increased from $86.9m in 2002-03 to $152.1m in 2003-04; an increase of 75%. This led to an increase in profit margin from 6% to 10%.

Bookshops recorded growth in terms of sales over this period, although the operating profit before tax declined, with the profit margin declining from 4% in 2001-02 to 1% in 2003-04.

Cultural Funding by Government, 2009-10 (cat. no. 4183.0), show the Australian Government allocated funding of $34.8m to Literature and print media in 2009-10. State and territory governments contributed $14.0m.
