ELECTRONIC LODGEMENT WITH GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS

Businesses with internet access were asked whether any electronic lodgements were made with government organisations during 2011-12. Over three quarters of these businesses reported at least one type of electronic lodgement, an increase from two thirds of businesses in 2009-10. Overall, businesses were most likely to report the electronic lodgement of payments (63%).

For four of the five types of electronic lodgements, the proportion of businesses that reported electronic lodgements increased with each successive employment size range. For example, 41% of businesses with 0-4 persons employed reported the lodgement of taxation forms via the internet, compared with 76% of businesses with 200 or more persons employed. Businesses with 20-199 persons employed were the most likely to report the lodgement of applications for licences or permits via the internet (32%).

By industry, the lodgement of payments via the internet was reported by more than half of those businesses with access to the internet. Businesses in Mining were the most likely to report any electronic lodgement (89%), with businesses in this industry having reported the highest proportion for each of the types, except for the lodgement of claims for grants or benefits. This was most frequently reported by businesses in Health care and social assistance (18%).
