Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were asked to report the number of subscribers as at 30 June 2013, by the advertised download speed (in ranges) of access connection.

For the purposes of the Internet Activity Survey, download speed is equivalent to the advertised or theoretical maximum speed of data transfer rate. This can differ considerably from actual speeds experienced by internet users, which can vary based on factors such as the modem, the distance from the node or exchange and the level of internet traffic.

The advertised download speed range that recorded the highest number of subscribers at 30 June 2013 was the 8Mbps to less than 24Mbps range, with 6.0 million subscribers, an 11% increase from the end of December 2012. Just under 4.0 million subscribers accessed the internet at an advertised download speed of 1.5Mbps to less than 8Mbps, a decrease of 6% from the end of December 2012.

Subscriber numbers with advertised internet access speed of 24Mbps or greater grew by 9% since the end of December 2012, and accounted for almost 1.8 million subscribers at 30 June 2013.

ISP CENSUS

The June 2013 iteration of the Internet Activity Survey is a full census of all ISPs operating in Australia. Comparison is made between June 2013 Census and the previous census cycle, conducted in respect of June 2010.

As at 30 June 2013, for all ISPs, the advertised download speed with the highest proportion of subscribers was in the 8Mbps to less than 24Mbps range, with 48% of all subscribers. In June 2010 the proportion of subscribers reported within this speed range was 27%.

In June 2013 the proportion of subscribers accessing the internet with an advertised download speed of 24Mbps or greater was 14%, compared to 7% in June 2010.
