In 2011-12, the estimate of cultural expenditure by the South Australian Government was $262.1m or 8% of the total estimate of expenditure of state and territory government cultural expenditure. Expenditure by the South Australian Government fell by 12% in 2011-12 from $296.3m in 2010-11. Recurrent expenditure accounted for 88% of South Australian Government cultural expenditure. The estimate of per person expenditure by the South Australian Government was $159.20.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of South Australian Government funds on Heritage activities fell 8% to $168.8m. Contributing to this fall was a 16% decrease in recurrent expenditure on Environmental heritage, from $120.3m in 2010-11 to $100.7m in 2011-12.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of South Australian Government funds for Arts activities fell by 18% to $93.3m. The main driver of this movement was the Film and video production and distribution category where expenditure on capital projects fell from $31.3m in 2010-11 to $7.1m in 2011-12. Expenditure on Other arts rose 12% to $30.5m accounting for 33% of expenditure on all Arts activities.
