CUSTODIAL ORDERS In 2011-12, 40% of defendants with a principal sentence of custody in a correctional institution received a sentence of less than 6 months. The proportion was very similar in 2010-11 (39%). Sentences of over 2 years in a correctional institution were handed out to 16% of defendants (17% in 2010-11). The median sentence length for defendants sentenced to custody in a correctional institution for All Courts was 6 months in 2011-12.
