STAGE OF PRODUCTION COMMENTARY
STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW
In the December quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 0.1%, the Intermediate demand index fell 0.2% and the Preliminary demand index fell 0.4%. Through the year to the December quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 1.1%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.4% and the Preliminary demand index fell 0.1%.
The rise of 0.1% in the Final demand index in the December quarter 2014 reflected a fall of 0.1% in the prices of domestically produced products and a rise of 3.3% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-13.7%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for building construction (+0.6%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+6.7%), other transport equipment manufacturing (+8.9%) and furniture and other product manufacturing (+7.0%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for dairy product manufacturing (-9.0%), and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-3.2%).
The fall of 0.2% in the Intermediate demand index in the December quarter 2014 reflected a fall of 0.3% in the prices of domestically produced products and a rise of 0.2% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-12.7%) and oil and gas extraction (-9.2%). Offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for accommodation (+9.8%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+8.0%), furniture and other product manufacturing (+8.2%) and computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+5.2%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-15.1%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-10.1%).
The fall of 0.4% in the Preliminary demand index in the December quarter 2014 reflected a fall of 0.4% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 0.7% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-13.3%), metal ore mining (-7.3%) and oil and gas extraction (-9.2%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for rental and hiring services (except real estate) (+1.4%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-15.1%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-10.5%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+8.3%) and computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+6.0%).
