STAGE OF PRODUCTION COMMENTARY
STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW
In the December quarter 2012, the Final demand index rose 0.2%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.6% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.6%. Through the year to the December quarter 2012, the Final demand index rose 1.0%, the Intermediate demand index rose 1.7% and the Preliminary demand index rose 1.4%.
The rise of 0.2% in the Final demand index reflected an increase of 0.1% in the prices of domestically produced products and a rise of 0.1% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for motor vehicle and motor vehicle part manufacturing (+2.4%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+3.0%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for other agriculture (-20.3%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+14.7%) and other transport equipment manufacturing (+1.6%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-6.1%) and furniture and other manufacturing (-1.8%).
The rise of 0.6% in the Intermediate demand index reflected an increase of 0.6% in the prices of domestically produced products and a rise of 0.5% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity supply; gas supply; and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (+6.9%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+6.8%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for coal mining (-10.0%), other agriculture (-7.2%) and sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (-6.7%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+4.4%), oil and gas extraction (+2.4%) and motor vehicle and motor vehicle part manufacturing (+2.9%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-6.2%) and polymer product manufacturing (-1.9%).
The rise of 0.6% in the Preliminary demand index reflected an increase of 0.6% in the prices of domestically produced products and a rise of 1.0% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity supply; gas supply; and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (+6.8%), petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+7.2%) and cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (+6.5%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for coal mining (-10.0%) and sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (-4.8%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+2.4%), metal ore mining (+4.5%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+3.9%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices of polymer product manufacturing (-1.6%) and electronic equipment manufacturing (-1.2%).
