NUMBER OF DWELLING UNITS AND STAGE OF PRODUCTION
- The total number of residential building commencements (4,454) in the March quarter 2009 remained virtually unchanged from the previous quarter but was 10% lower than in the same quarter of the previous year.
- A slight decrease in the number of new houses commenced was matched by an equal rise in the number of other residential buildings commenced.
- The total number of dwellings under construction (18,824) at the end of March 2009 remained relatively unchanged from the previous quarter. However, this number was 7% lower than in the same quarter of 2008.
- The total number of dwellings completed (4,252) fell by 33% in the March quarter of 2009 and by 6.3% over the previous 12 months.
