More than half (56%) of federal offenders were aged between 30-49 years, with the federal offender population being generally older than the total prisoner population, where 65% of prisoners were aged between 20-39 years. For federal prisoners, the median age ranged from 30.0 years (Northern Territory) to 41.0 years in New South Wales and South Australia. The median age for the total prisoner population ranged from 32.9 years (Queensland) to 36.0 years (South Australia).

Overall, the federal parolee population was older than the federal prisoner population, with 62% aged between 35 to 54 years. For the federal prisoner population, a majority (57%) were aged between 30 to 49 years.
