These are the new releases from the National Centre for Crime and Justice over the past 12 months.
Federal Defendants, Selected States and Territories 2008-09 (cat. no. 4515.0)
Previously, broad level information about federal defendants who are finalised in the criminal courts was available in Criminal Courts, Australia, 2008-09 (cat. no. 4513.0). This publication included the total number of finalised defendants with one or more federal offences, age and sex for each court level.
Federal Defendants, Selected States and Territories, 2008-09 was released in May 2010 and presents nationally comparable statistics relating to Federal Defendants heard in the criminal jurisdiction of the Higher (Supreme and Intermediate), Magistrates' and Children's Courts across Australia for the period 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009. The publication includes offence information using the ABS Australian Standard Offence Classification (ASOC) (cat. no. 1234.0) and a non-standard set of offence groupings that provide a more detailed offence view, as well as sentence outcomes. The statistics describe the characteristics of finalised defendants with at least one federal offence, including information about their offences and sentence outcomes. Federal Defendants, Selected States and Territories will be an annual publication.
Recorded Crime - Offenders 2007-08 and 2008-09 (cat. no. 4519.0)
The first issue of Recorded Crime - Offenders, Australia (cat no. 4519.0) was released in August 2009, and a second issue in March 2010. Offender statistics provide data relating to the number and characteristics of alleged offenders aged 10 years or more who have been proceeded against by police during the 12 month reference period (financial year). This publication provides a profile of alleged offenders, including their age, sex, Indigenous status, principal offence, how often they have been proceeded against by police within the reference period, as well as a count of proceedings that may result in court actions. Recorded Crime - Offenders, Australia (cat. no. 4519.0) is an annual publication.
Crime Victimisation 2008-09 (cat. no. 4530.0)
Crime Victimisation, Australia, 2008-09 (cat. no. 4530.0) was released in February 2010 and presents the first results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' redesigned annual national Crime Victimisation survey. The survey was conducted from July 2008 to June 2009 using the ABS Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS).
The publication includes data on victims for a selected range of personal and household offences in the 12 months prior to the survey interview, including assault, threatened assault, sexual assault, robbery, household break-in, attempted break-in, motor vehicle theft, theft from a motor vehicle, other theft and malicious property damage. Data are classified by demographic characteristics. The publication also provides information on whether victims reported these incidents to police, characteristics of victims, characteristics of their most recent incident, and people's perceptions of safety and problems in their neighbourhood.
Previously, the ABS conducted a national Crime and Safety Survey on a three-yearly basis. The last results from this survey were published in Crime and Safety, Australia, 2005 (cat. no. 4509.0). The redeveloped Crime Victimisation Survey has resulted in improved methodology, more timely headline indicators about the level of crime victimisation in Australia and flexibility to cater for new and emerging areas of crime. As a result of changes to methodology, there is a break in series and data is not comparable to previous data published in Crime and Safety, Australia, 2005 (cat. no. 4509.0). Crime Victimisation, Australia (cat. no. 4530.0) will be an annual publication.
