Data from the ABS surveys Childhood Education and Care and Household Use of Information Technology were included in the compendium for the first time in the January 2013 release and are summarised below. For more information on these and other data sources and updates please see the publication Arts and Culture in Australia: A Statistical Overview, 2012 (cat. no. 4172.0).
The 2011 Survey of Childhood Education and Care (cat. no. 4402.0) captured data on parental involvement in selected cultural activities such as reading to their children or engaging in music, art or other creative activities with their children. The survey found that in the last week of June 2011, for parents with children aged 0-2 years, 80% read from a book or told a story to their children, 77% played music, sang songs, danced or did other music activities with their children and 52% assisted them with drawing, writing or other creative activities. Among parents involved in cultural activities with their 3-8 year olds, 96% told stories, read or listened to the child read in the previous week.
According to the publication Household Use of Information Technology, Australia, 2010-11 (cat. no. 8146.0), 13 million people accessed the Internet at home in the 12 months prior to interview. Over half (53%) used the Internet for cultural activities such as watching movies and listening to music and over a third (37%) downloaded videos, movies and music. Of the 9.6 million people who purchased or ordered goods and services over the Internet for private purposes, 45% purchased cultural products such as CDs, DVDs, videos, books and magazines.
