PARTICIPATION IN SELECTED CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
An exciting development has been the release of the first issue of Participation in Selected Cultural Activities, Australia, 2010-11 (First Issue) (cat. no. 4921.0). This publication provides information on the participation of persons aged 15 years and over in a number of cultural activities including the performing arts, writing, visual art activities and craft activities, in the 12 months prior to interview. It is expected to be updated on a three yearly basis.
Information in this release includes: characteristics of participants, participation rates in selected cultural activities, the number of cultural activities people are involved in, reasons for participation, whether the respondent earned a wage or salary or other income for their participation and whether there were any barriers to undertaking cultural activities.
Results showed that 4.7 million (27%) of Australians aged 15 years and over participated in at least one cultural activity in the 12 months prior to interview in 2010-11. The most popular cultural activities were textile crafts, jewellery making, paper crafts and wood crafts with a participation rate of 10%, followed by sculpting, painting, drawing and cartooning (including digital pieces) with a participation rate of 8%. People aged 15-24 years had the highest participation rate in the selected cultural activities of all age groups at 34%, while overall, women were found to participate in cultural activities more than men (participation rates of 31% and 23% respectively). Cultural activities were more popular amongst people born in Australia (participation rate of 28%) than people born overseas (participation rate of 23%). Of the states and territories, the Australian Capital Territory had the highest participation rate in cultural activities (37%) followed by Tasmania (32%).
