MAIN CONDITION IN MOTHER

Perinatal deaths differ from general deaths because a condition may be reported in the record for the fetus/infant, the mother, or for both. A maternal condition was reported in 851 (34%) of the 2,501 perinatal deaths registered in 2008, compared to 723 (29%) of the 2,532 perinatal deaths registered in 2007. In 2008, Complications of placenta, cord and membranes (P02) was the most frequently reported maternal cause, accounting for 318 or 13% of perinatal deaths, compared to 309 or 12% in 2007. Maternal complications of pregnancy (P01) accounted for 288 or 12% of perinatal deaths in 2008, compared to 255 or 10% in 2007.

- nil or rounded to zero (including null cells)
(a) Perinatal deaths are all fetal deaths (at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight) plus all neonatal deaths. See Glossary for further information.
(b) Males deaths include those perinatal deaths of sex indeterminate.
(c) Data cells with small values have been randomly assigned to protect the confidentiality of individuals. As a result, some totals will not equal the sum of their components. It is important to note that cells with a zero value have not been affected by confidentialisation.
(d) Causes of death data for 2007 have been revised and are subject to further revisions. See Technical Note 2: Revisions Process for further information.
(e) 2008 data have been subject to a process improvement which has increased the quality of these data. See Technical Note 1: Perinatal Deaths Process Improvement for further information.
(f) Causes of death data for 2008 are preliminary and subject to a revisions process. See Technical Note 2: Revisions Process for further information.
(g) These data represent all perinatal deaths with a condition in the mother.
