The change in geographic classification will result in an unavoidable break in time series at 30 June 2011. To assist users in managing this time series break, the ABS will prepare population estimates prior to 2011 under the new geography. The length of the time series will depend on the geographic level and the type of the estimates.

For total population estimates, the ABS aims to prepare a ten year SA1 time series (2001-2011), a 20 year SA2 time series (1991-2011), a 30 year SA3/SA4 time series (1981-2011) and a 40 year GCCSA time series (1971-2011).

For age/sex population estimates at the single year of age level (up to 84 years, then 85 and over) the ABS plans to go back ten years on SA2s (2001-2011), 20 years on SA3s/SA4s (1991-2011) and 30 years on GCCSAs (1981-2011).

The ABS also plans to release a longer time series for total population estimates of SA2s and above in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2001-2011 (cat. no. 3218.0). The 20 year SA2 time series will be released, along with the 30 year SA3/SA4 time series and the 40 year GCCSA time series. Historical data on other geographies may be available by request.

The following table depicts the ABS's intention of total population estimates that will be prepared.
