SOUTH AUSTRALIA POPULATION GROWTH IN ADELAIDE Adelaide SD The population of the Adelaide SD was 1.17 million people at June 2008, which was 73% of SA's population. The Adelaide SD increased by 13,000 people (1.1%) in 2007-08, while the remainder of SA increased by 4,600 people (also 1.1%). During 2007-08 the four LGAs with the largest population growth in the state were in the Adelaide SD. Salisbury (C), in Adelaide's north, experienced the largest increase (2,400 people), followed by neighbouring Playford (C), which increased by 2,000 people. Onkaparinga (C), in southern Adelaide, increased by 1,800 people, and Port Adelaide Enfield (C), in Adelaide's north-west, gained 1,700 people. The fastest-growing LGAs in the Adelaide SD in 2007-08 were Playford (C) and inner-city Adelaide (C), both of which increased by 2.7%. Other LGAs to experience rapid population growth included Gawler (T) (2.0%), Salisbury (C) (1.9%) and Port Adelaide Enfield (C) (1.6%). The growth of Gawler (T), on the north-eastern fringes of the Adelaide SD, took the town's population past the milestone of 20,000 people in 2007-08. No LGAs in the Adelaide SD experienced population decline. Outer Adelaide SD In 2007-08 the Outer Adelaide SD experienced the fastest population growth of all SDs in SA, increasing by 2.0% (2,600 people). Several LGAs within the Outer Adelaide SD recorded rapid growth during 2007-08. Victor Harbor (C), on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula, and Mount Barker (DC), in the Mt Lofty Ranges east of Adelaide, were the two fastest-growing LGAs in the state, increasing by 3.5% and 2.9% respectively. Other Outer Adelaide LGAs to experience rapid growth included the Fleurieu Peninsula areas of Alexandrina (DC) (2.6%) and Yankalilla (DC) (1.8%). These four LGAs have been among the fastest-growing in the state for several years as indicated by their average annual growth rates, which range from 2.5% to 3.2% for the five years to June 2008. For the tenth consecutive year, Mount Barker (DC) had the largest growth (830 people) of LGAs in the Outer Adelaide SD. Alexandrina (DC) and Victor Harbor (C) also recorded large population increases, gaining 580 and 440 people respectively. No LGAs in the Outer Adelaide SD experienced population decline.
POPULATION CHANGE IN THE REMAINDER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA Population growth In 2007-08 the remainder of SA experienced generally smaller increases in population than the Adelaide and Outer Adelaide SDs. The riverside LGA of Murray Bridge (RC) increased by 450 people; Copper Coast (DC), in the north of Yorke Peninsula, grew by 330 people; the south-eastern LGA of Mount Gambier (C) increased by 220 people; and Whyalla (C), in the north-east of Eyre Peninsula, grew by 210 people. Copper Coast (DC) and Roxby Downs (M), in the far north, were the fastest-growing LGAs outside of the Adelaide and Outer Adelaide SDs, each increasing by 2.7%. These LGAs were followed by Murray Bridge (RC) (2.4%), and Grant (DC) (2.2%), which surrounds Mount Gambier (C) in the south-east . Population decline All of the LGAs that experienced population decline in 2007-08 were outside the Adelaide and Outer Adelaide SDs and many have experienced several consecutive years of drought and been affected by record low inflows to the Murray River. The largest decline was in the Riverland LGA of Berri and Barmera (DC), which decreased by 130 people, after its population had grown slightly in 2006-07. Other LGAs to experience population declines in 2007-08 included The Coorong (DC) (60 people) in the Murray Mallee and Murray Mouth region; Cleve (DC) on the Eyre Peninsula and Coober Pedy (DC) in the far north, both of which decreased by 40 people; and Tatiara (DC) (30 people) in the upper south-east.
