SUMMARY
In 2010-11, there were a total of 10,828 defendants finalised in Australia's criminal courts with at least one federal offence: 756 in the Higher Courts; 9,910 in the Magistrates' Courts; and 162 in the Children's Courts (Table 2.1).
There were 10,432 persons and 396 organisations finalised in 2010-11 compared with 13,156 persons and 851 organisations in 2009-10. Over two-thirds (68% or 7,387) of all finalised defendants were male while 27% (2,886) were female (Table 2.1).
Across all three court levels, 71% of defendants finalised were proven guilty of at least one federal offence. Of those proven guilty, one-fifth (20% or 1,550) were sentenced to a custodial order (Table 2.1).
The 10,828 defendants represented a total of 42,037 federal offences finalised; an average of 3.9 offences per defendant. There were 3,264 federal offences finalised in the Higher Courts; 38,417 in the Magistrates' Courts; and 356 in the Children's Courts (Table 2.1).
