- Of the 472,600 Western Australian residents holidaying abroad in 2008-09, almost 60% travelled to nearby South-East Asian countries. The top destinations were Indonesia (31%), Thailand (12%), Singapore and Malaysia (both over 7%). New Zealand was also a popular destination, accounting for over 6% of holiday departures overseas.
- In the December quarter 2009, 157,000 residents left Western Australia for overseas holidays, up by 35% on the same quarter of 2008.
- The popular holiday destination of Indonesia received 91% more tourists from this state, in comparison with the December quarter of the previous year. Japan and Malaysia saw increases of 46% and 42% respectively. One likely contributor was the increased competition between airlines, and cheaper fares, to and from Perth.
- Notable increases also occurred in resident departures to the United Kingdom (up 41%) and USA (up 30%) since December 2008.
- Hong Kong and New Zealand saw a fall in Western Australian tourists, down 6.5% (3,100) and 5% (8,250) respectively on the same quarter of the previous year.
