FEDERAL DEFENDANTS
Limited data about federal defendants are presented for the first time in this publication. Defendants who appear in Australian criminal courts may be charged with either a Commonwealth or State legislative offence or both.

In 2009-10, 178 (0.4%) defendants in the Children's Courts had one or more federal offences. The proportion of federal defendants is less than one percent in each of the states and territories, except the Australian Capital Territory where the proportion of federal defendants is 8% (39 defendants). This is due to there being more Commonwealth property in the Australian Capital Territory (Table 4.3).
