In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure by the three tiers of government averaged $309.80 per person in Australia, an increase from $299.50 per person in 2010-11.
Cultural expenditure funded by the Australian Government in 2011-12 was $104.60 per person which was similar to expenditure of $104.50 per person in 2010-11. Expenditure in 2011-12 for Heritage activities was $27.10 per person, while for Arts it was $77.50 per person.
The estimate of expenditure by state and territory governments was $145.60 per person in 2011-12, comprising $107.10 per person for Heritage and $38.50 per person for Arts. This was a 5% increase on the 2010-11 figure of $138.20 per person. In 2009-10, expenditure by state and territory governments equated to $138.80 per person.
The estimate of expenditure on cultural activities by local government was $59.60 per person in 2011-12, a 5% increase from $56.80 per person in 2010-11. South Australia ($81.30), Victoria ($66.80) and Western Australia ($63.60) had the highest local government per person expenditure in 2011-12.
