INNOVATING BUSINESSES
Overall, the proportion of businesses with at least one type of introduced innovation increased with each successive employment size range. This pattern also holds for each type of introduced innovation across each employment size range. By employment size, new organisational/managerial processes was the most commonly introduced type of innovation for businesses with 200 or more persons employed (49%), 20-199 persons employed (39%) and 5-19 persons employed (29%). New goods or services was the most commonly introduced type of innovation (16%) for businesses with 0-4 persons employed. New organisational/managerial processes was the most reported type of innovation introduced (21%). The least reported were operational processes and marketing methods, (both 17%). Arts and recreation services recorded the highest proportion of innovating businesses in 2009-10, at 52%, closely followed by Wholesale trade, at 50%. The lowest proportion of introduced innovation was recorded by businesses within the Transport, postal and warehousing industry (21%). The Wholesale trade industry recorded the highest proportion of businesses that introduced new goods or services (36%). Manufacturing had the highest proportion of businesses with new operational processes (29%). Arts and recreation recorded the highest proportion of businesses introducing new organisational/managerial processes (28%). Accommodation and food services had the highest proportion of businesses with new marketing methods at 26%. Transport, postal and warehousing had the lowest proportion of businesses which reported the introduction of new goods or services (7%), closely followed by businesses in the Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry (8%). The industries which recorded the lowest proportions for the introduction of operational processes were Other services (8%) and Transport, postal and warehousing (9%). Transport, postal and warehousing also had the lowest proportion of businesses which reported the introduction of organisational/managerial processes (13%) and the lowest proportion of businesses introducing new marketing methods (8%).
