Expenditure per person
In 2011-12 the estimate of cultural expenditure per person, by state and territory governments, was $146.50, an increase from expenditure per person in 2010-11 ($138.20) and 2009-10 ($138.80). In 2011-12 expenditure per person for Design fell 66% to $0.40 from $1.30 in 2010-11, but rose 37% for Other performing arts from $1.30 to $1.80.
Total expenditure on cultural activities by individual state and territory governments generally reflects population size with the more highly populated states spending the most in absolute terms. However, on a per person basis, the smaller states and territories had relatively higher levels of expenditure.
In 2011-12 the highest estimate of cultural expenditure per person was in the Northern Territory ($377.90) followed by the Australian Capital Territory ($315.40), Western Australia ($257.10) and Tasmania ($253.80). New South Wales had the lowest estimate at $112.60 per person.
