NSW DEMOGRAPHY UPDATE OUTCOMES OF THE REVIEW OF THE AUSTRALIAN STANDARD GEOGRAPHIC CLASSIFICATION (ASGC) The ABS will be replacing the current ASGC with the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) through an implementation strategy commencing in 2011. This decision is based on a review of the ASGC conducted in 2007. The Information Paper: Outcome from The Review of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (cat. no. 1216.0.55.002) was released in July, and highlights the main stakeholder concerns arising from the review and the subsequent changes made to the ASGS to address these concerns. The design of the new ASGS will occur throughout 2008-2010. Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) design will be the next step in the process and will involve intensive user consultation with key stakeholders on the design of SA2s. There will be considerable opportunities for SA2 boundaries to be changed resulting from stakeholders feedback. The consultation period will be a 3 month process and SA2 design should be completed by mid 2009. For more information on the outcomes and changes from the review see Outcome from The Review of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (cat. no. 1216.0.55.002).
