INTRODUCTION
This summary presents statistics about custodial sentences handed down in the criminal jurisdiction of the Higher (Supreme and Intermediate) Courts of Australia, for the period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010, for all states and territories, except Tasmania. Data for Tasmania were not available for inclusion. Data for the contributing states and territories have been aggregated to provide a total in the tables presented, unless otherwise specified.
These statistics are sourced from the ABS Criminal Courts collection. Courts statistics are derived from data about each defendant provided to the ABS by the state and territory agencies responsible for courts administration. The ABS receives data directly from these agencies in all states and territories except for Queensland (where data are supplied via the Office of Economic and Statistical Research) and New South Wales (where data are supplied via the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research).
The statistics relate to defendants who have been sentenced in the Higher Courts to a custodial order, including custody in a correctional institution, custody in the community and fully suspended custodial sentences. Statistics relating to defendants who have been sentenced to a non-custodial order (e.g. community service orders, monetary orders and good behaviour bonds) are under development and will be available in future releases.
The offence categories used are classified to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Offence Classification (ANZSOC), 2011 (Third edition) (cat. no. 1234.0).
