OVERVIEW

In 2010-11, the estimate of cultural expenditure by the Western Australian Government was $556.8m or 18% of total state and territory government cultural expenditure. Expenditure rose 8% in 2010-11 which followed a rise of 6% in 2009-10. Recurrent expenses accounted for 78% of Western Australian Government cultural expenditure. (Tables 4 and 9)

In 2010-11, the estimate of expenditure of Western Australian Government funds on Heritage activities increased by 7% to $422.0m. Other museums and cultural heritage accounted for more than half of the increase in expenditure (57%), which is a rise of 36% on 2009-10. There was also a large increase in the estimate of expenditure on Art museums, up 95%.

In 2010-11, the estimate of expenditure of Western Australian Government funds for Arts activities went up 12% to $134.8m. The largest increase was for Design (from $0.4m in 2009-10 to $21.8m in 2010-11), most of it being capital activity ($21.5m). Expenditure on Performing arts venues accounted for 29% of all Arts expenditure. This was a decrease from 49% in 2009-10.
