RECURRENT AND CAPITAL EXPENDITURE

In 2010-11, 88% of the estimate of total local government expenditure on cultural activities was for recurrent expenses. This was a 5% increase on the estimated value of recurrent expenditure in 2009-10. New South Wales had the largest amount of recurrent expenditure at $356.3m, followed by Victoria ($302.3m) and Queensland ($204.9m). (Table 13)

The estimate of capital expenditure by local government in 2010-11 was $156.9m. This was an increase of 5% from 2009-10. New South Wales had the largest amount of capital expenditure at $53.4m, followed by Victoria ($52.5m) and Queensland ($23.7m).

Local government expenditure estimates are obtained from state and territory Local Government Grants Commission's data, or equivalent. For 2010-11, figures were sourced at the 'total' level for Local governments in Australia. This is less detail that in previous years, where figures were provided for a number of arts and culture categories.
