Assembles, positions and detonates explosives at mining sites.
Skill Level:
The entry requirement for this occupation is an AQF Certificate II or higher qualification or at least 1 years relevant experience. Registration or licensing may be required.
Tasks Include:
- inspects blasting areas and ensures observance of safety regulations
- cuts channels under working faces
- checks bore-hole depths and cleans holes
- inserts high explosives into holes or positions hoses and fills holes with blasting agents or liquid slurry explosives
- assembles primers using detonators and explosive cartridges, and attaches wires, fuses or detonating cords
- inserts primers into holes and connects detonating cords to ring mains
- fills and tamps holes with rock dust, sand or other materials
- connects wires, fuses or detonator cords into series, tests electrical circuits and repairs malfunctions
- ensures all explosives are detonated and declares areas safe
- identifies, corrects and reports misfires
